Ryan Leslie “Diamond Girl”

A lot of people know Ryan Leslie for puttin’ Cassie on the map.  He produced her hit single “Me & U”.  He did work for P. Diddy and Tommy Matolla.  The brother is real talented, he’s a songwriter, singer and producer.  Check out the song “Diamond Girl”.  There’s also a remix of this song with 50 Cent floating around.

SoCal Promo Tour: Day 5

Long story short, we cancelled Day 5 for many reasons.  Jeremiah was gettin’ sick, traffic, driving and all the bull shit we encountered, wore me down a lot.  I felt like we were wasting our time, nothing went according to plan.  I called Amaar for advice last night and based on our conversation, I felt like it was better to just pack it up, go home and reload.  LA is a whole different animal and I should’ve planned my trip better.

On the way home, we decided to hit up a publishing company.  They were stationed in Porter Ranch, about an hour north of LA.  These dudes looked like they were ballin’, the neighborhood had some real nice houses and I saw some real fly whips driving around.  We came up to this big ass gate, looked like some Lord of the Rings type joint.  They had crazy security, I bet even the cops get harassed when they try to come through.  Basically, we rolled up, security asked me who I was, took my name down, called the office, and said nobody was home and to just give them the CD etc.  Wether somebody was home or not, these dudes really screen who they work with and that’s very respectable

….I’m glad to be back in the Bay.

Socal Promo Tour: Day 4

Today sucked.  1st of all, thanks to my online teacher for giving me a
final exam this week.  I spent most of the morning and afternoon working
on it.  The evening came and we were ready to rock.  Got ready and hit
the road.  We got there 20 minutes early so we went through our set a
couple times.

Club La Conga in San Pedro
*********************
Notable acts that performed here:
Sugar Hill Gang
Green Day
Tierra
And a lot more for me to remember, but dude mentioned a lot of big
names.

We came in the club and that shit was empty haha.  Only people there
were the 2 bar tenders and the owner.  Again, miscommunication.  The
person who booked us said he was gonna make flyers for us to push.  When
we arrived in Long Beach Saturday night, we never got a phone call to
pick up the flyers.  Who knows if he ever got them made.  I told the
promoter that if we got actual flyers, we could’ve gotten at least a
decent turn out, word of mouth don’t go that far especially if nobody
knows you in the area.

I was told that there were 2-3 other acts performing, but in reality, we
were the only ones booked.  The owner apologized and gave us free
drinks.  It still didn’t make up for the disappointment.  The club did
nothing to promote the show, and the person who booked us told the owner
that it was already promoted.  Haha, welcome to the wonderful world of
bull shit.

I turned down two other shows to do La Conga and Rhino TV…but how was
I suppose to know that these 2 shows weren’t all that great?  When the
show was canceled, I was stuck at that point and we just went back to
the hideout.

I know for a fact that LA is the mecca of music, I’m just lookin’ in the
wrong places.  I could’ve orchestrated things a lot better, and did more
research.

I’m stuck and pissed off…

Socal Promo Tour: Day 3

*note: FYI these 4 shows that I booked, I just booked them blindly. I
didn’t worry about the type of audience, venue or location. It’s almost
like I’m going on a blind date every night. I get ready for the date,
dress up nice, drive to the location, I get some butterflies, walk up to
the door and when it opens, its always different from what I expected.
When I get back to home, I’ll be immune to suprises ….and blind dates
haha.

This morning we met up with Automatic, he has ties with Dr. Dre
Aftermath Records. He’s also the in house producer for Money Tree
Entertainment based in San Jose. He was looking for beats to shop to
people so I gave him my beat CD. He just skimmed through it, he didn’t
realy put a good ear it to my beats. He gave me a few pointers, had a
quick discussion about music equipment, composing songs and the usual
music industry talk.
Mixing makes a big difference!!!!!! If the beat is hot but the mixing
is off, its not gonna work. Mixing brings the music to another level
and it’s one of the things that sperates the men from the boys. Drums
are key. When Aftermath A&R’s listen to beats, they really check for
pounding drums. Drums have to knock!!!!!

We left Automatic’s spot around 3:30pmI had a feeling we were gonna get lost again, so we left earlier. The
address on the email was wrong so it came out wierd on google maps…we
did end up getting lost. On top of that, it was traffic 75% of the
way. So I arrived at a bad mood.

My understanding was that I was going to get interviewed and perform a
song. Then when I confirmed this morning, they said I was going to get
interviewed but just freestyle 16 bars. I’m a producer, I don’t
freestyle so I didn’t mind putting my boy Jeremiah in my place. I
could’ve spit a written verse but it wouldn’t be a freestyle.

It was your typical internet TV show, it was hosted by Joe Rhino
(Comedian). It had the amateur night feel to it. It was great watching
Joe Rhino rip on these amateur rappers lol. It was not bad at all.
The show started and the first group got to perform basically a whole
song (2 verses and a hook)…that kinda threw me off, because they told
me that I couldn’t do a song, but I can’t complain because it’s their TV
show, they can do whatever they want.

Jeremiah came up, and his interview came out pretty good. Joe Rhino got
a few good jokes in. It was Jeremiah’s performance that was bad. Joe
Rhino wasn’t impressed and he gave Jeremiah some real brutal and honest
feedback. I was in the green room watching and the other performers
started critiquing him too. Basically it lacked energy and his inensity
was very low. The producers of the show also played the wrong beat so
Jeremiah had to improvise.

A lot of things went wrong so everyone was at fault. There were
communication break downs and were never told exactly what they wanted
from us. It’s a good learning experience for everyone. I told Jeremiah
that when he’s not ready or doesn’t feel comfortable, he has to speak
out. We always have the option of backing out of a situation if it
doesn’t feel right.

Jeremiah looked hurt by what Joe Rhino said, I tired to explain the
situation, tell him what I thought he could’ve improved but he just
wasn’t in the mood to hear it.

For my situation, I felt like the communication was off, and I was told
two different things. I backed out of it because I didn’t feel
comfortable. Bottom line is – don’t make an ass out of yourself, if it
doesn’t feel right, pull the plug and shut it down if its too
confusing.

I wouldn’t consider this as a loss because we still learned a lot from
this situation. Lets just say this blind date didn’t got too well.

Shout out to everyone at Rude 1 Productions and best of luck on future
shows!

Club La Conga tomorrow @ San Pedro.

Socal Promo Tour: Day 2

I sat down with Woody from Chaos Theory Music this morning. The office
was on Santa Monica, Colorado street. On the way to his office I saw
Sony BMG and Universal Records. The building were crazy, they looked
clean and offcial! Anyways, we met up with Woody in hopes to get my
music placed in film and television. Woody is the man that shops music
to clients. His biggest client is MTV.

The meeting went well, I filled out some paper work and handed him the
CD. We had the usual music industry talk. I asked him how to get my
foot in the door and land meetings with “important” people, people who
make decisions. He gave the same answer that I’ve been hearing from
everyone. He told me to just get out there! Mingle with people, go to
parties, meetings usually happen because you met a person who’s a friend
of a friend of a friend of a firend’s major artist and somehow you
worked your way in.

Chances of landing that meeting increases as you promote yourself
consistently. Going to a major label’s office and begging for a meeting
is difficult. Landing a meeting through that route is almost
impossible, I guess its possible, but chances are slim. The bottom line
is that when you meet with someone, your ish needs to be super top
notch! It was a good healthy meetng. We headed back to the hideout,
aka “Grandma’s house”.

Blue Magic @ Dragon Fly
********************
We just hopped off stage…..45 mins later.

The crowd was tough. We performed “Get Down”. They labeled us as
“hyphy” all the way. Its all good, everyone that was there was either
a) performer b) producer c) promoter. There was a good 30-40 people. I
wouldn’t expect a bigger crowd on a Monday night. We tore it down
regardless, we gave it 110%. I got some good networking done and handed
out some CDs. This is US building it from the ground up. Thanks to
everyone who came out.

…let me rewind though…we were the 1st peoples up in that spot. I
had a feeling we were gonna get lost and we did just that. We had to
repark the car because we were off by a few blocks. Security gaurds
were probably the coolest peoples in there. The shows started an hour
late because everybody else was late on some hollywood shit (no pun
intended haha).

We came up on stage, I repped for the Bay and showed LA love right of
the bat. Some people in the crowd knew Big Rich so they showed some
love. Everybody else was like statues. I’ve done many shows like this,
where nobody moves even after 2-3 bands perform. Felt like people where
too good to move. Once again, tough crowd but they started to loosen up
after a few drinks. Its always hard opening up a show. But bottom
line, we networked and got a chance to rock the stage.

Shout out to Leon P and Pow (Blue magic promoters), Nonsense and thank
Royal for taking pics.

Tomorrow we have a TV show taping, The Rhino Room @ Pomona.
