True Life: The Independent Hustle

Socal Promo Tour: Day 1

March 24, 2008 · 1 Comment

Today (Sunday March 23rd) was the first day of the our SoCal tour. This
is the only free day we had to do whatever we wanted. We were scheduled
to hit 3rd Street Promenade at noon and did just that. It wasn’t as
packed as we expected and the crowed was very small. After walkin’
around for another 30 mins we decided to go to the House of Blues in
Anahiem. Nothing there too. So we headed to Hollywood and Amoeba
Music. Nothin’ really poppin again. We figured it was bad because of
bad timing, and the holiday made the crowd smaller. It was more like
“family day”.

We went back to our hide out, aka “Grandma’s house”, around 4pm and took
a 3 hour power nap. We waited for sunset and headed for Hollywood
again. This time the crowd was good, but they did not seem like the
right audience. These promo CDs cost money! They’re free, but they
cost money! I didn’t feel comfortable handing them out to the type of
people who would most likely a) not listen to them b) throw them out as
soon as we gave it to’em c) jus have the CD become a permanent fixture
inside their trunk. That’s my perspective on this situation. Many
become very aggressive and force people to hear their music by getting in
peoples faces. Here at Bayani Music, we value every single CD we pass
out! If a person doesn’t want to listen to my music then its all good,
I keep it movin’.

The industry has become so saturated that some people won’t even take
FREE music! We ran into other rappers trying to sell their CDs and it
seems like that method of promotion and sales are slowly becoming phased
out. Everything is now moving to the internet! Funny how some
“serious” industry cats say use to tell me that doing business online
was not professional, they use to tell me “we don’t deal with people on
the internet, we deal with them face to face”, I just laugh at that
because Timbaland “Apologize” sold 3 mill on iTunes. No matter how
macho that shit sounds, it looks very out dated. The hustle is changing
drastically.

Back to the SoCal Tour. We barely got off 30 CDs, it was more personal
choice. I wanted to save the CDs for people who would actually want
them, such as the ones that see us perform. Like I said, even though my
CDs are given out for FREE, they still have value.

Despite the BS, we were still in HOLLYWOOD. Bright lights, stars on the
sidewalk, all different types of people. Beautiful women, street
entertainers, moms and pops stores AND beautiful women ; )

Tomorrow we have Club Dragon Fly in Hollywood @ 9pm. They’re only
giving us 1 song/5 minutes and probably placing us to open the
show…We’re gonna give them the most intense 5 mins they’ve ever seen.
We gotta work our way up from the bottom and this is where it starts.

Reporting live from the trenches, this is Nicar…

MAN, MAN, MAN, the internet is a wonderful thing, I agree. The same thing is happening with comics too and, I imagine, everything else. It ’s like anyone can do what they want cause the internet takes the big, money-hungry middlemen away from between the people who wanna draw/write/musicify stuff and the people who just wanna look/read/hear it.
