True Life: The Independent Hustle

Socal Promo Tour: Day 3

March 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment

*note: FYI these 4 shows that I booked, I just booked them blindly. I
didn’t worry about the type of audience, venue or location. It’s almost
like I’m going on a blind date every night. I get ready for the date,
dress up nice, drive to the location, I get some butterflies, walk up to
the door and when it opens, its always different from what I expected.
When I get back to home, I’ll be immune to suprises ….and blind dates
haha.

This morning we met up with Automatic, he has ties with Dr. Dre
Aftermath Records. He’s also the in house producer for Money Tree
Entertainment based in San Jose. He was looking for beats to shop to
people so I gave him my beat CD. He just skimmed through it, he didn’t
realy put a good ear it to my beats. He gave me a few pointers, had a
quick discussion about music equipment, composing songs and the usual
music industry talk.
Mixing makes a big difference!!!!!! If the beat is hot but the mixing
is off, its not gonna work. Mixing brings the music to another level
and it’s one of the things that sperates the men from the boys. Drums
are key. When Aftermath A&R’s listen to beats, they really check for
pounding drums. Drums have to knock!!!!!

We left Automatic’s spot around 3:30pmI had a feeling we were gonna get lost again, so we left earlier. The
address on the email was wrong so it came out wierd on google maps…we
did end up getting lost. On top of that, it was traffic 75% of the
way. So I arrived at a bad mood.

My understanding was that I was going to get interviewed and perform a
song. Then when I confirmed this morning, they said I was going to get
interviewed but just freestyle 16 bars. I’m a producer, I don’t
freestyle so I didn’t mind putting my boy Jeremiah in my place. I
could’ve spit a written verse but it wouldn’t be a freestyle.

It was your typical internet TV show, it was hosted by Joe Rhino
(Comedian). It had the amateur night feel to it. It was great watching
Joe Rhino rip on these amateur rappers lol. It was not bad at all.
The show started and the first group got to perform basically a whole
song (2 verses and a hook)…that kinda threw me off, because they told
me that I couldn’t do a song, but I can’t complain because it’s their TV
show, they can do whatever they want.

Jeremiah came up, and his interview came out pretty good. Joe Rhino got
a few good jokes in. It was Jeremiah’s performance that was bad. Joe
Rhino wasn’t impressed and he gave Jeremiah some real brutal and honest
feedback. I was in the green room watching and the other performers
started critiquing him too. Basically it lacked energy and his inensity
was very low. The producers of the show also played the wrong beat so
Jeremiah had to improvise.

A lot of things went wrong so everyone was at fault. There were
communication break downs and were never told exactly what they wanted
from us. It’s a good learning experience for everyone. I told Jeremiah
that when he’s not ready or doesn’t feel comfortable, he has to speak
out. We always have the option of backing out of a situation if it
doesn’t feel right.

Jeremiah looked hurt by what Joe Rhino said, I tired to explain the
situation, tell him what I thought he could’ve improved but he just
wasn’t in the mood to hear it.

For my situation, I felt like the communication was off, and I was told
two different things. I backed out of it because I didn’t feel
comfortable. Bottom line is – don’t make an ass out of yourself, if it
doesn’t feel right, pull the plug and shut it down if its too
confusing.

I wouldn’t consider this as a loss because we still learned a lot from
this situation. Lets just say this blind date didn’t got too well.

Shout out to everyone at Rude 1 Productions and best of luck on future
shows!

Club La Conga tomorrow @ San Pedro.
